Ainscough Crane Hire’s Heavy Cranes team recently worked with steel infrastructure specialist Briton Fabricators Limited to install a new footbridge as part of main contractor Keir’s work on the A13 Road Widening project.
The A13 Road Widening Project is being delivered by Kier on behalf of Thurrock Council and will support economic growth, reduce congestion, and enhance safety.
Horndon Bridge – which will be used by pedestrians, cyclists and horse-riders – links the village of Horndon on the Hill with the town of Stanford-le-Hope. The bridge will provide the village residents with a safe route over the A13 carriageway, connecting them to local amenities, schools and the nearest railway station, with links both to central London and the Essex coastline.
The footbridge was manufactured by Nottingham based Briton Fabricators and came in three sections. Each segment was too large to bring in in its standing position so was transported on its side and then turned 90 degrees by using a 300t crane and two 90t cranes in tandem with 30t, 34t and 35t weights.
Each piece of the new footbridge was slewed from the turning area into a designated prebuild area at the side of the motorway where they were joined together in readiness for the final uplift.
The main lift utilised a 750t crane, operated by experienced drivers Ashley Winter and Danny Carrick. The operation required a 110t lift weight with a 17.3m radius to uplift and install the footbridge into its final location. Due to slight differences in carriageway levels, additional matting was required in order to guarantee the lift took place in balanced conditions.
