Rhenus Logistics is calling on UK exporters to take action following the introduction of the EU\u2019s new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). <\/strong><\/p>\n

The legislation, which became mandatory on 12 August, applies directly across all EU member states and affects all UK businesses placing packaged goods on the EU market.<\/p>\n

Under PPWR, packaging must now be reduced to the minimum necessary, recyclable by design, increasingly reusable and made with recycled content where required. Harmful substances such as heavy metals and as so-called forever chemicals must be avoided, and businesses are reminded to support compliance with documentation.<\/p>\n

The new regulations affect manufacturers, importers, distributors and retailers, producers, fulfilment service providers, online sellers and product owners. Introduced in February 2025, PPWR represents a major shift in packaging compliance requirements, aimed at reversing the trend of increased waste packaging across the EU by making the provider of the packaging responsible throughout its lifecycle. Failing to abide by the new regulatory requirements can lead to supply chain issues downstream.<\/p>\n

Rob Mulligan, UK Customs Manager, The Rhenus Group explains: \u201cThe impact of PPWR is very much immediate. UK exporters must review packaging, verify supplier information and prepare and review compliance documentation and EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) obligations in each EU member state where goods are supplied.<\/p>\n

\u201cCompliance goes beyond recyclability, encompassing harmful substance restrictions, harmonised EU labelling, conformity documentation and EPR obligations. UK exporters must review packaging, verify supplier information and prepare compliance documentation supporting the packaging used in order to remain compliant.<\/p>\n

To demonstrate compliance Regulation (EU) 2025\/40 of the European Parliament and Council, as amended. Packaging must be labelled according to<\/p>\n

EU guidelines. Labels must be clear and accessible; suppliers can incorporate QR codes providing information such as technical specifications and recycling methods. Where physical marking is not possible, accompanying documentation may be used.<\/p>\n

Businesses supplying customers in Northern Ireland should be mindful that PPWR also applies, albeit to a reduced regulatory level, for example removing the need to comply with EPR obligations and exoneration from EU re-use target and deposit refund schemes.<\/p>\n

By 2028, harmonised EU-wide sorting pictograms, material-composition labels and consumer waste-sorting instructions will also be required for export.<\/p>\n

Rhenus Logistics is supporting customers with packaging audits, compliance reviews and supply-chain planning as the new regulation takes effect.<\/p>\n
