TORONTO: October 16, 2018. Southwest Airlines and Canada partner Westjet shared a stand at The International Air Cargo Association’s Air Cargo Forum this week.
The Canadian airline has announced it would be introducing B787-9 services from Calgary to London Gatwick, Paris and Dublin next year on April 28, May 17 and June 01 respectively.
“Alberta’s connectivity to the rest of the world is vital for our economy,” said Ed Sims, WestJet president and CEO. “WestJet is investing in Alberta to bring further economic growth, boost tourism to the province, and to further position our city as an international aviation hub.”
The new scheduled service is expected to generate Can$100 million in total economic output. WestJet’s annual economic impact on Canada annually generates Can$17.4 billion and supports more than 153,000 jobs.
Southwest increased its passenger traffic by 3.8 percent in September year-on-year to 12.5 million, for an 80.5 percent load factor. Third quarter traffic rose 2.5 percent to 41.4 million with a load factor of 83.9 percent, while year-to-date volumes reached nearly 122 million for a 4.0 percent rise compared to the same period last year.
The airline has produced consecutive annual profits for the past 45 years.
