Norsepower wins prestigious award for reducing shipping emissions
Norsepower has been announced as the winner of the international Energy Globe Award, a global sustainability prize, in the ‘Air’ category.
The mission of the Energy Globe Awards is to demonstrate that there are proven solutions for current environmental challenges, implemented by innovative people who put ideas into action.
Shipping has begun to realise the importance of embracing the energy transition. From a regulatory perspective, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) introduced GHG emission targets for 2030 and 2050, while shipping companies are coming under more scrutiny from financiers, charterers and shippers to embrace greater environmental and social governance.
The Energy Globe Awards judging panel recognised that reducing emissions in shipping is essential to improving the global environment, and Norsepower’s contribution through its work with Maersk, Scandlines, SeaCargo and Vale.
Norsepower’s award win recognises the organisation as the first company in the world to implement hundred-year-old sailing principles in a commercially viable modern product. Norsepower is bringing sailing back to shipping; making large cargo and passenger vessels cleaner and more cost effective.
On receiving the award, Tuomas Riski, CEO, Norsepower Oy Ltd said: “While transport by sea remains the world’s most efficient form of transport, the shipping industry creates almost 3% of the world’s total man-made greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Norsepower Rotor Sails have been specifically designed to reduce emissions from ships today, and we have clocked over 140,000 hours of operation and saved over 10,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. But the reality is that there are so many more vessels that could economically benefit from Rotor Sails – up to 30,000 ships – and more than 80 megatonnes of CO2 emissions could be reduced on an annual basis by our Rotor Sails.”
Riski continued, “I am very proud that Norsepower has won the international Energy Globe Award for our innovative Rotor Sail technology. This is a tremendous achievement for the whole Norsepower team and recognises the work we are doing to increase widespread adoption of wind propulsion technologies in the shipping industry to reduce global emissions. 187 countries participated in the Energy Globe Awards this year with nearly 3,000 environmental projects. The winners were announced on November 8 in the context of the Climate Summit COP26 and Norsepower was announced joint winner with Anglo Belgian Corporation.
